Numerous speech therapy goals can be targeted using materials such as kinetic sand and most children find this an incredibly fun activity.
You can specifically target certain speech sounds while playing this game to help your child practice their articulation. For example, if your child speaks with a lisp and is working on the 's' sound in speech therapy, they can work on pronunciation of target 's' word nouns, such as 'sand, 'spade' and 'sieve' while playing. Verbs can also be targeted such as 'squeeze' and 'squash'! However these words can be difficult for some children to say when used as early articulation goals.
To make this activity more challenging, your child may be encouraged to make sentences that include the target sound. For example, when working on 's', you could prompt them to say: "I see the sand" and "I see a sandcastle" - the more 's' words in the sentence the harder it is for a child to say them all accurately. Be careful to not push your child too hard if they find the long sentences harder at first as your speech pathologist will be able to guide you regarding the best ways to progress.
